Remember when Google threatened to leave Australia if the country implemented a „news media bargaining code“ forcing social media platforms to pay news publishers? Google and Facebook did not leave; they paid up, striking deals with news organizations to pay for the content they display on their sites for the first time. Now countries around the world are looking at Australia’s code as a blueprint of how to subsidize the news and stop the spread of “news deserts”—communities that no longer have a local newspaper. #australia #facebook #google

After two decades of data management being a wild west, consumer mistrust, government action, and competition for customers are bringing in a new era. Firms that generate any value from personal data will need to change the way they acquire it, share it, protect it, and profit from it. They should follow three basic rules: 1) consistently cultivate trust with customers, explaining in common-sense terms how their data is being used and what’s in it for them; 2) focus on extracting insight, not personal identifiable information; and 3) CIOs and CDOs should work together to facilitate the flow of insights, with a common objective of acquiring maximum insight from consented data for the customer’s benefit. #data-economy #hbr #privacy
Deadly with extreme weather now, climate change is about to get so much worse. It is likely going to make the world sicker, hungrier, poorer, gloomier and way more dangerous in the next 18 years with an „unavoidable“ increase in risks, a new United Nations science report says. And after that watch out. The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report said Monday if human-caused global warming isn’t limited to just another couple tenths of a degree, an Earth now struck regularly by deadly heat, fires, floods and drought in future decades will degrade in 127 ways with some being „potentially irreversible.“
„Today’s IPCC report is an atlas of human suffering and a damning indictment of failed climate leadership,“ United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a statement. „With fact upon fact, this report reveals how people and the planet are getting clobbered by climate change.“ #climate #un
On Tuesday, tech and communications regulator Roskomnadzor threatened to block Wikipedia over the Russian-language page covering Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, claiming it contained „false messages“ about war casualties and the effects of economic sanctions, among other things. „On March 1st 2022 the Wikimedia Foundation received a Russian government demand to remove content related to the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine posted by volunteer contributors to Russian Wikipedia,“ reads the statement sent to The Verge via email. „As ever, Wikipedia is an important source of reliable, factual information in this crisis. In recognition of this important role, we will not back down in the face of efforts to censor and intimidate members of our movement. We stand by our mission to deliver free knowledge to the world.“ #fake-news #ukraine
Facebook and Twitter on Friday were blocked in Russia, amid President Vladimir Putin’s ongoing military invasion of Ukraine. In a statement issued on Friday, Roskomnadzor, the country’s communications regulator, explained the decision was made to „block access to the Facebook network“ after at least 26 cases of „discrimination against Russian media and information resources“ since October 2020. The agency highlighted Facebook’s recent restriction of Kremlin-tied media sources RT News and Sputnik News across the EU. Hours later, Russian news agency Interfax reported that Roskomnadzor had also begun blocking Twitter. #facebook #social-media #twitter #ukraine
